FFS FPS!

Posted in Prittle Prattle, Reviewlet, XBOX 360 on February 25, 2011 by xbevisx

For a long time I’ve eschewed playing FPS games online. Many years ago I used to enjoy a bit of Counter Strike now and then. After a while though it would be hard to turn a corner without being headshot into oblivion by some kid with “leet” skills. I don’t care what you say, dying within a fraction of a second from spawn, before you’ve even loosed off one round is not fun.

It didn’t stop me playing FPS games, I just didn’t play online. I did have some really great times playing system link games round one of my friend’s house. 2 TVs back to back on the coffee table, junk food ordered in and much rowdiness and laughter. I played a lot of co-op Gears of War 1&2 and Halo Reach, and they were great times.

Recently though I caved in a finally bought CoD: Black Ops. I tell you what I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Despite getting completely owned from time to time, I can still hold my own, and even peaked at a 2.00 kill/death ratio (doesn’t sound a lot, but it was a rather proud moment). The leveling and equipment system keep things very addictive, but don’t feel like they have too much of an impact on the game. I could be wrong of course.

The killstreak rewards are a very nice feature in the game. Get a set number of kills without dying and you are granted various rewards in the form of spy-planes that reveal the position of enemies on the mini-map, napalm strikes, all the way up to packs of vicious attack dogs that charge all over the map and cause one hit melee kills. These really spice up battles.

Luckily I’ve really not experienced any smack talk so far. Granted I spend a fair amount of time in a private party with a couple of friends also playing the game, but most of the time I’ve had the headset on whilst playing solo I’ve noticed there’s not a lot of talking in general. This is good because the bad attitudes of many XBL members put me off playing similar things online previously.

I’ve never found myself logging off from dying too much at all which is a good sign. In fact once I’ve started a session, I generally find it hard to stop. I’m either trying to beat challenges, level up or just improve my performance. Consider me a convert.

Warriors of Chaos and the new Orcs & Goblins

Posted in Prittle Prattle, Wargaming, Warhammer Fantasy Battle on February 15, 2011 by xbevisx

Hey there, folks.

I have some photos for you today. Just a couple of shots of the Warriors of Chaos I’m working on. I really do love these models, possibly some of my favourite fantasy battle stuff.

As usual I tried to go for a quick but interesting paint scheme. Quick paint schemes are the best because you don’t get bored halfway through painting a huge army! I chose Tin Bitz (Citadel) / Tinny Tin (Game Colour) as the main colour as I just love the way it looks and its really easy to work with. I’ve tried to add a little bit of weathering to areas of the models.

On a separate note, today I finally got to get my hands on the latest Black Box sent out by Games Workshop at work. For those of you that aren’t aware, the Black Box is a selection of preview models sent out to certain game stores a month or so before the models are actually released. This time we received the new Orc and Goblins army book, a unit of Savage Orc Boys and the Arachnarok Spider.

First things first, I glued the spider together. This thing is huge. In fact here’s a slightly blurry photo taken from my mobile phone http://plixi.com/p/77614231 Luckily it’s a really well designed kit. Everything goes together without too much fuss, there are nice square pegs on some of the legs to shop them being a possible nightmare, and even when I was putting it together and thought “oh no, there’s an awful gap here” usually the next piece I glued on completely disguised the gap! My opinion may change when I finally attach the goblin riders to the top, but only time will tell!

Then I moved onto the Savage Orcs. You can get some really cool poses out of these chaps, although I have noticed that their arm joints are more like the Ogre Kingdom fixed joints than the other Orc kits which possess flat joints. This, plus the fact that the torso and legs come in one piece, could make any possible conversions a bit more challenging. The other thing to be aware of when assembling these is if you aren’t careful how you position them on the base they could cause problems with ranking up, with various limbs stuck out at all angles. Other than that the models have nice character and look like they are ready to give enemies a damn good thumping.

I haven’t had a good read of the army book yet but one thing sticks out like a sore thumb. It has 32 less magic items in it than the previous book! That’s right, we are down to 8(!) magic items. This is pretty shocking and may turn some people off, but I had some good discussions with various friends about this and a few opinions popped up.

1. There are many decent magic items in the main rule book. Maybe the designers are hoping players will consider these a bit more.

2. The magic items that are left are pretty kick ass. There’s also the consideration that some of the other army books have too many magic items. Sure, it’s good to have options but if people are always going to plump for the same old choices, and other items get forgotten for not being worth the points etc, then what’s the point even even printing them? Maybe the designers are thinking “all killer and no filler”?

3. Possibly some of the cool effects granted from certain magic items have become racial/unit abilities, making the game more about what units you choose than what tasty item you give a hero?

We shall see in time how the book pans out, but so far I’ve heard 99% positive feedback. The book, now hardback, is rather nice though and I’ve already pre-ordered mine.

I hear the Tomb Kings will be the next army for a refresh. I’m really interested in what the old dusty bones will get. I’ve heard rumours of a large sphinx creature? But more importantly, I’d quite like a new Ogre Kingdoms book after that please!

ORKPOCALYPSE!

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on February 7, 2011 by xbevisx

Well hello there everyone!

Today I have some photos from the event we had yesterday at the shop. For a while now my gaming club have been planning a Warhammer 40k Apocalypse game using just Orks and my boss, the store owner thought that we could do it on Feb 6th which is also his birthday.

So we gathered and glued as many Orks as possible for this event. It was an impressive sight to behold.Just to add a sense of scale the first two pictures in the gallery of the Orks set out on some tables was just one side of the battle. Two units in the game were “Green Tides” which consists of 100 Orks in one single unit!

Please enjoy!

My Sleeve Tattoo

Posted in Prittle Prattle on February 2, 2011 by xbevisx

Last year I spent a considerable amount of time and money on getting my first sleeve tattoo. I won’t lie, there were days when travelling to Nine in Brighton I wasn’t looking forward to the pain and cursing myself for such a bright idea, but I’m incredibly happy with the final product.

The original inspiration came from a postcard Amy bought me many years ago.

I had a consultation with Ade, the tattooist and we altered the design. I decided that I wanted the warrior character to be Guan Yu, a famous hero from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Here’s the end result.
