Blood Bowl Match Report #1 : Introduction.

Hello folks,

Now this is something I have been planning for quite a while now, but haven’t really had the time to do it. I want to take you through a match of Blood Bowl and help you see why I love this game so much.

Something funny that came about while playing the game chronicled in this post was at the time my girlfriend and her mum were watching the Euro Football final in the other room, and the sound of the crowds in the stadium filtered through to where we were playing. This added a new level to Blood Bowl that we both found amusing. When I start running a league with my friends I might get the sound of fans on CD and play it on loop in the background to add to the atmosphere.

In this first post I want to give you a break down of the teams.

I will be using an Orc team composed of:

  • 3 Black Orcs: Slower but hard very hard-hitting.
  • 3 Blitzers: Fastest players on the Orc team and the block skill makes it harder to take them down.
  • 1 Thower: Believe it or not pretty good at passing, but also has skills that help him pick up the ball.
  • 4 Line Orcs: Bog standard players. Nothing special of note.
  • 4 Rerolls
  • 1 Fan Factor

My opponent for this game will be Adam, who will be sporting a Human team composed of:

  • 1 Ogre: Stronger than even the Black Orcs but the downside is every turn you wish to use the ogre you must make a dice roll to see how stupid he is. You roll a one and he can’t do anything.
  • 4 Blitzers: Much like the Orc Blitzers. Faster and a bit tougher.
  • 2 Catchers: Even faster than the Blitzers but weaker and more prone to getting injured.
  • 1 Thrower: Again, like the orc thrower.
  • 3 Linemen
  • 2 Rerolls
  • 4 Fan Factor

You will have to excuse us for the unpainted model on Adam’s team. At some point he has actually lost one of his Blitzers and is using Griff Oberwald as a stand in miniature. This may be important in the report, because since playing the video game version of Blood Bowl, I have developed a deep hatred for Griff, as his skills make him a nightmare to take down when on an opposing team. To this end, I will probably go out of my way to beat the living snot out of him, even though he is only a stand in model for a Blitzer and not really Griff himself!

Adam, The Souless Nightmare. This is Adam. Terrifyingly, he was born without a soul.
Dare you look into his dead eyes?

For this first match report (there may be more in the future), the choice of Human and Orc teams is pretty solid. They are both good teams for starters as neither of them have too many quirky rules or traits, and the way their stats are make them quite forgiving. The teams aren’t too dissimilar other than the Humans are a bit quicker and the Orcs pack a bit more punch.

We had to do a few things before we started the match. First of all The Gate. This is a roll off plus each teams fan factor to both decide who has the FAME bonus this game (which effects some of the kick-off table results) and also to work out just how many spectators we have, which turned out to be an impressive 19,000! Then we rolled for weather, the result being “Nice” so no adverse effects happened to the game rules. And then we flipped a coin to see who would choose whether to kick or receive. Adam won and chose to receive.

Due to the fact we were making a record, every turn, of what happened the game took a lot longer than normal so we decided to play the first half one night, and conclude the game some other evening. Please watch this space for the first half and I hope you enjoy the match!
