A catch up with the Beard.

Posted in Prittle Prattle on September 9, 2012 by xbevisx

Hello folks,

It’s been a bit longer than I like since my last post due to various factors, so here’s a brief update style one.

I’m still settling into my new job which I’m definitely enjoying, despite having trouble dragging myself out of bed in the morning. Outside of work I just feel so busy all of the time!

One of the main things is band practice. The band has had a real reshuffle over the last year. We are back down to one guitarist, although I don’t think we will be looking for a new one in the future. In my opinion we don’t really need one right now, we are getting all our songs to where we want to be without one. Also our singer, Barney, left the band a while ago. We’ve had great times together and it was sad to see him go. Even sadder is the fact that the reason he left was due to him taking his family to live in Florida! XboxLive and Facebook will be our main mode of contact till he comes back for a visit. Still, we have acquired a new singer (who will be unveiled soon) and we have a couple of gigs in the pipeline, so I think we are getting back on track. The last couple of practices have been excellent and really productive.

Speaking of Xbox360, I haven’t actually even played mine in quite a while! I just don’t seem to have the time for it. I’d like to make time at some point, because I was just getting into Dragon’s Dogma plus I’d really like to try Sleeping Dogs because I’ve heard some good things about it. The only gaming I have done lately has been a spot of Blood Bowl: Championship Edition on PC. I’m starting to see why people can be put off Blood Bowl when I’m playing this sometimes. The game is so bastard infuriating and the dice rolls make me want to tableflip (saying that, seeing how my last tabletop league match went I’d say they are pretty accurate! /weep ). Besides that I snatch a few minutes of Bejeweled on Amy’s iPad here and there. That game is a horrible, time draining trap of bright explodey colours. Screw that game.

Tabletop wise the Blood Bowl league is rolling along nicely. I haven’t seen any fatigue in the players which can be a problem with our club for some reason. Played a few boardgames when I can squeeze them in such as Elder Sign (Lovecraft games work in the sense that they fill you with great feeling of hopelessness and despair) and Runebound. I’ve got my eye on the Blood Bowl card game expansion as well.  I’ve also had a couple of games of 40K 6th Edition. The games I’ve had have made me realise that at the moment, I not really into space marines. It’s probably down to the lists that I’m writing but the other armies I own right now all look a lot more interesting and quirky. So the old marines will probably get packed away for now, until I get a hankering for power armour again.

Speaking of which, I picked up the new Limited Edition 40K starter box “Dark Vengeance” last week. Every now and then, between the horrible price hikes, failcast nonsense and scrapping my favourite paint range (Foundation), GW do something that makes you go “Wow, that is cool”. And that’s what Dark Vengeance does. Now I was more than likely going to buy this even if just for the mini rulebook, but the models in this starter box are made of pure, undiluted win-juice. Unfortunately, this has strengthened my idea to do a Chaos army soon. On the plus side I managed to swap out all the Dark Angel stuff I was never going to use, for the Chaos stuff from a friends Dark Vengeance, so that’s a good start!

Other stuff I’m doing includes:

  • LARP weapon fighting practice. Every couple of weeks, great fun and good exercise.
  • Archery classes. The first of my three induction lessons was great and I’m really looking forward to doing some more.
  • Possibly giving gig promotions another go. I’ve been chatting to a guy about running semi regular nights at a local venue.
  • Monday night Pathfinder. Getting together with my online friends on Mumble and getting some dice rolled. Half-orc Bard is proving to be rather entertaining.
  • Despite having to miss a good couple of nights due to schedule issues, Kris and myself are still making terrain for our future Necromunda campaign. The stuff is starting to look excellent and Kris has taught me how to use weathering powders. Hopefully I can get a post up soon showing off what we’ve done so far.

That’s it for now, later this evening I’ll be working on the next chapter of the Blood Bowl fantasy football league so keep your peepers peeled!

Take Care

Netflix History Mega Reviewlet Bonaza!

Posted in Film, Prittle Prattle, Reviewlet on June 13, 2012 by xbevisx

Hello folks,

Nothing gaming related today. I just had the idea recently to go through my Netflix history and give a really brief review of everything on it to date. If I hadn’t written this post it would’ve been gnawing at the back of my mind for ages.

South Park Seasons 10-14
Thumbs Up
Hadn’t watched this for ages so needed a catch up. Still as good as ever. Highlight was the Guinea Pig episodes.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time
Thumbs Up
Anime. Title pretty much sums things up. Likeable characters.

Dexter Season 1
Thumbs Up
Finally watched it and loved it. Will catch up on the rest when time permits.

Omid Djalili: No Agenda
Thumbs Up
Omid is just an infectious guy.

Louis C.K.: Chewed Up
Thumbs Up
Heard a lot about him. Enjoyed his show.

Lee Mack: Going Out Live
Thumbs Up
Lee Mack is just tops and always raises and good laugh.

Tim Vine: So I Said To This Bloke
Thumbs Up
Delightfully cheesy Pun-Marathon.

Thor: Tales of Asgard
Thumbs Up
Animation. Tale of a young Thor. Not brilliant but if I’m pushed one way or the other I have to go thumbs up.

Drawn Together
Thumbs Down
Might give it a few episodes to see if it improves, but currently not impressed. Is it trying too hard to be “edgy”?

Young Ones
Thumbs Up
Well duh. Couple of episodes I’ve either not seen or possibly watched them so long ago I’d forgotten them.

The Invincible Iron Man
Thumbs Down
Animation. I got bored very quickly. I might give it another go. Didn’t really like the art style either.

MonkeyMagic
Thumbs Up
Really enjoyable action movie. If it’s anything to do with Monkey it’s already halfway to a thumbs up with me.

Super Mario Bros
Thumbs Down
Old TV series. Like retro-gaming for me: Leave it in the past, it’s better as a memory.

A Bit of Fry and Laurie Seasons 1&2
Thumbs Up
Don’t think I’ve ever really watched this properly, or at least I haven’t watched it while being old enough to remember/appreciate it. Probably going to buy on DVD sometime to add to the collection.

SNL: The Best of Will Ferrell
Thumbs Up
Already have this on DVD, but the Netflix version has scenes/sketches I have never seen before.

Robot Jox
Thumbs Up
Like previously, if pushed I’d have to go positive for this. Friends rave about it, but that must be a nostalgia thing? Hilarious ending and final shot.

SNL: The Best of Chris Farley
Thumbs Down
Not as good as the Will Ferrell one. I really like Chris Farley, but this really didn’t seem to do him justice.

Dreamscape
Thumbs Down
Pretty average. I guess the actual dream sequences weren’t bad. Did have one of my fave villain actors, David Patrick Kelly, in it though.

Bob & Margaret
Thumbs Down
I remember this being good when I watched it on TV. I’m going to give this recent viewing more of a chance to change my mind however.

BASEketball
Thumbs Up
So stupid, but still makes me laugh. Haven’t seen it for years.

Musashi: The Dream of the Last Samurai
Thumbs Up
Anime about the legendary swordsman. Tackles some of the myths around him in a very interesting and amusing way.

Day of the Dead
Thumbs Up
Good zombie fun, even if I get freaked out every time when that one guy gets his head pulled off and you can hear the pitch of his voice raise as his vocal cords stretch.

Elvira, Mistress of the Dark
Thumbs Up
So 80′s and there’s wall to wall cleavage. Win.

Stardust
Thumbs Up
Extra thumbs up for De Niro and all the comedians as the dead brothers.

Todd Margaret Season 1
Thumbs Up
Not usually one for cringe comedy generally, but this was fun and I like David Cross

Primer
Thumbs Down
I’ve heard many good things about this, but with all the actors talking all over each other, I just got annoyed quite quickly and turned it off.

Tokko Season 1
Thumbs Down
Anime. Bad art, bad story and yet I insisted on watching it till the end of the series.

Insidious
Thumbs Down
So boring. Nothing more.

Bob the Butler
Thumbs Up
Only just scrapes a thumbs up due to a couple of really funny scenes. I don’t care what people think, I quite like Tom Green even if he has been watered down for this family movie.

Gurren Lagann
Thumbs Up
Anime. Excellent series, I flipping loved it. Utterly preposterous mecha-fights and a storyline sucker punch that left me shocked.

Fargo
Thumbs Up
Get in the wood-chipper!

Adventures in Babysitting
Thumbs Up
Thumbs up mainly for the 80′s factor.

Defendor
Thumbs Up
Woody Harrelson makes an awesome vigilante. Ending not dissimilar to Hobo with a Shotgun really.

Clerks
Thumbs Up
I like it, but not as much as some friends. Is it a nostalgia thing again?

Brain Damage
Thumbs Down
This film was awful, repetitive and annoying. God knows why I bothered watching it till the end?

American Werewolf in London
Thumbs Up
Re-watched this to remind me what good 80′s horror was after the previous dross. I totally didn’t realise just how sudden it all comes to an end before though: I’m in a cinema with dead people, I’m a Werewolf, loads of car crashes, BANG I’m dead.

The Stuff
Thumbs Down
Another really bad 80′s horror. Did I learn nothing from Brain Damage? This film doesn’t even really know what it wants to be!

Saxondale
Thumbs Up
Never caught this on TV. Possibly my favorite character of Steve Coogans.

15 Storeys High
Thumbs Up
Sean Lock’s sitcom based in high-rise flats. Hilarious, but Netflix was the first time I had ever heard about it. Make sure to watch this if you haven’t already.

Baccano!
Thumbs Up
Anime. Set in early 1900′s America and centered around immortals, the non-linear storyline takes a while to catch up with, but this is definitely worth your time.

Devil May Cry
Thumbs Down
Down purely for the fact it didn’t grab my attention quick enough. I may have to give it another chance when I have some time.

Trekkies
Thumbs Up
Documentary about avid fans of Star Trek (oddly enough). For some reason the film quality/fashion sense (when they aren’t in Trek gear) seems more dated than I thought it would be for when it was made?

Shaolin Soccer
Thumbs Up
Not the first time I’ve watched this, but only realised after about 20-30mins in. Still jolly good, silly fun.

Nighty Night
Thumbs Up
Amy has always told me how good this is, but I never got round to watching it till recently. It’s so far past cringe comedy it’s actually amazing, and at times mind-blowing. Excellent.

Redline
Thumbs Up
Anime. Futuristic race car antics. Think about Wacky Races but done by crazy anime artists that are tripping balls big time. Loved the crazy art style.

Daybreakers
Thumbs Up
Felt really short. Nice take on the vampire genre. No Sparkle Fairys in sight. Willem Dafoe has a scary face.

Grosse Pointe Blank
Thumbs Down
Wasn’t really digging this. Another(?!) victim of nostalgia? I thought it was something of nothing really.

The IT Crowd
Thumbs Up
Again, duh? “I would’ve used my robot hand for good!”

Shigurui: Death Frenzy
Thumbs Up
Anime. Starts with the build up of a duel between a one-armed man and a blind cripple, then proceeds to explain how they got to this position. I’m guessing there will be a second season, because a lot of things weren’t resolved.

Pin
Thumbs Down
Another bad and boring 80′s horror, that wasn’t frightening in the least.

Firefly
Thumbs Up
Yes, I know, why am I only just watching it now? Just never got round to it I guess. Only as far as the first episode so far. Loving it. Unfortunately, I’ve seen Serenity so know what’s going to happen to some of the characters.

Mythbusters
Thumbs Up
Why wouldn’t you give this a thumbs up? Can generally fit in an episode before I go to work each day. WOOT!

Shutter Island
Thumbs Up
Not blown away, but I liked it. Imagined that I was playing LA NOIRE during some scenes (not that I’ve actually played the real thing).

Hobo with a Shotgun
Thumbs Up
Not as good as everyone I have spoken to has said, but I did enjoy it. The over saturated colours and retro soundtrack did pique my interest though.

Tokyo Gore Police
Thumbs Up
Read the title. Imagine the film that goes with that title. You are pretty much there.

Doghouse
Thumbs Up
Stupid but fun. Not as much violence as I was expecting, but there’s plenty of body parts strewn around the set. You just don’t see how they got separated from their owners. 1 question though? Why the hell doesn’t Danny Dyer die? *huff*

1941
Thumbs Up
Another film that I have revisited after not having watched it since I was a kid. To be honest, the film is a real mess. It’s like Steven Spielberg thought “How much stuff can I actually fit on-screen all at once?”.

Nude Nuns With Big Guns
Thumbs Down
Not even all the nudity can save this pile of old crap. As Father Jack would say “NUNS!! REVERSE! REVERSE!”

Looking forward…

Posted in Blood Bowl, Necromunda, Prittle Prattle, Wargaming, Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy Battle on May 20, 2012 by xbevisx

Hello folks,

Just a shortish post (it started out shortish, but I wrote more than I had expected – Ed.) today which is probably just as much for my benefit as yours! I’m going to be writing about some projects that I have planned for the near future, which I can hopefully keep on top of. My refueled enthusiasm should help, but only time will tell.

Blood Bowl League

Currently, a few of my gaming friends are running a Warhammer Blood in the Badlands campaign. Once this is finished, I hope to start a small Blood Bowl league. At the moment it looks like their should be 8 teams taking part, which is a pretty decent number. I’m determined to see this league through to completion because the last one I ran fizzled out right at the end due to a couple of players never getting round to playing their games. This time, if you miss the match it will be a forfeit and we won’t stall on unplayed games.

From this league I will have numerous other things to take care of. First and foremost, getting my team built and painted. I’ve gone for a Chaos team this time, instead of my usual Orcs. I played a chaos team on my PC version of Blood Bowl, and with the ability to gain mutations I think it could be a fun team to play and convert model-wise. I have made alteration to the normal way you set up a chaos team however. Usually, you can choose from a Minotaur, Chaos Warriors and Beastmen, but I’ve chosen to use the Marauder models instead (keeping the Beastman stat-line) and I’ve converted a Chaos Spawn to count as my Minotaur. This does not give me an in-game advantage in any way, it was purely an aesthetic choice as I’m not a massive fan of the actual Chaos Blood Bowl team. I have made considerations whilst doing this as well. For example, I made sure all the marauders I have assembled have horned helmets to make sure the “Horns” special rule the Beastmen get still makes sense.

Secondly, I’m looking to get a custom pitch for Magnusson’s Marauders, as I’ve chosen to call them. I’ve been looking on FF Fields for quite a while now and really like their stuff. I’m hoping to get a custom logo made for my team as well. I have contacted them and I’m currently awaiting a reply and price quote. As well as this I shall also attempt to make my own dugout, something avid Blood Bowl players tend to do. The best one I have seen to date however can be viewed here.

Finally, some of you may already know, I’d like to run a fantasy football style league using the stats that are generated from my Blood Bowl league. This way people I know on interwebz that can’t take part in the actual league will instead be able to monitor the leagues progress and also have a bit of fun themselves.

Attempting to get up to speed with my painting

I think it is safe to say I probably won’t need to buy many models for a very long time. Luckily, with the discovery that Fairy Power Spray can strip the paint off of plastic models without melting the plastic itself, I will be able to salvage a lot of old models that I’m not happy with. This includes:

  • Space Marines (WH40k): I think I might be on my 3rd or 4th paint scheme for my marines at the moment. The amount of paint stripping I need to do is scary, but I’m very happy with my current scheme and it is pretty quick and easy to make each marine look pretty good which is the main thing.
  • Ogre Kingdoms (WHFB): 3rd paint scheme for these guys.
  • Imperial Guard (WH40k): Only the 2nd paint scheme I’ve done for these particular chaps. Not that many are actually built so far, and won’t be until the new edition of WH40k comes out, because knowing my luck I’ll build them with options that work nicely in the current edition, only to be rubbish in the new one.
  • Orks (WH40k): Again, not that many actually painted, even though I’m on my 2nd or 3rd paint scheme. Lately, I have had a real urge to build loads of crazy Ork vehicle conversions, although hopefully one of my up-coming projects might help me with this desire.
  • Chaos Warriors (WHFB): Not particularly high on my list of priorities at the moment, but will crack on with them at some point.

Necromunda/Mad Max Campaign

Chatting with a few friends the other night about what other things we’d like to try out and play, and what we decided on was a Necromunda campaign, but one with a difference.

A while ago, GW released rules for playing Necromunda outside of the usual Hive City setting. There are even rules for vehicle creation/combat as well. So why don’t we take the core rules of Necromunda, these additional expanded rules, and build a game that we truly want to play. Where gang fights gang in a desolate, harsh environment simply to survive?

The possibilities for rule tweaking and model conversions is quite exciting. The next few weeks/months will consist of formulating ideas, play-testing and preparation.

This project has also given me the urge to make looks of Post-Apocalyptic style terrain to play around/on. I think a trip to Hobbycraft is on the books soon.

Well that all I can think to write currently. Within the next week I hope to get a few photos up of projects I’m currently working on, until then, take care everyone!

Dead Future

Posted in Prittle Prattle, Wargaming on July 18, 2011 by xbevisx

Hello there, friends!

Today I am going to be talking to you about a project I’m working on for a few friends at my games club. Using the Inquisitor game rule book produced by Games Workshop I will be running a short, story driven campaign. The setting I have chosen will be a planet in the 40K universe that I created for use in a previous Necromunda campaign I ran about a year ago. As the blog post title suggests, this campaign will be zombie flavoured. I know a lot of people are burnt out on zombies, with every game ever getting some kind of undead mode or DLC, but for what I require them for they are perfect. I will be taking a lot of influence (read that as ripping off) from video games like Left 4 Dead, Call of Dutys Zombie mode and a few others.

Left 4 Dead in particular has been a massive influence on some of the choices made for the campaign. Primarily I have stolen a lot of the special infected and plonked them straight into my system. Normal shamblers are alright and I have plenty of them in the game chasing the characters around, but the special infected will add a real danger element to the proceedings and make things really interesting.

So how is this going to work from a player’s point of view and how do they end up in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?

Each player will be in control of one character which they will have to provide a suitable model and short background for. Perhaps a paragraphs worth explaining who they are and what they did before the attack.

All stats are based off of percentile dice, 2 D10′s with 1 marked as tens and the second as units. Rolling these gives a result out of 100 and you need to roll underneath your stat score, obviously the better you are at a particular thing the higher your score and the more likely you are to roll below it on a percentile. What actions a player can make during a turn is decided by their speed dice. You declare what you would like your character to do and roll a set amount of dice, 4+ is considered a success and for every success you can accomplish 1 of the things you stated you wished to do. It’s a very easy system to pick up and most of the work is done by the GM (in this case me). The player will simply tell me what they wish to do, roll some dice and I will do all the number crunching and tell them what they require to roll next. This is a great system and allowing the GM to make decisions on the fly with the stats backing him up makes for a really flexible game session with many cinematic possibilities available, which is what you want from a good game. I will give some examples in the course of chronicling my experiences with this campaign.

Story wise, the first game will see each character being summoned to a meeting by a VIP (I’m undecided what to make him yet, a crimeboss, an official, it all depends on what backgrounds the players come up with for their characters). Think about the start of the classic film The Warriors. All the characters get drugged from their drinks, and wake up with who knows how much time passed, in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. I’ll admit that it isn’t the cleverest of introductions but it gets everyone in the same place, and more importantly unarmed. Thats right, no-one is having any weapons at the start of this campaign. They are going to have to scavenge to get equipped. Tell this to any miniatures game player, “You are unarmed and surrounded”, and they will shudder with fear. I have a long term plot in mind but unfortunately I don’t know if any of the players have access to this blog, and some of the elements I would really like to keep as a surprise for them.

So far we have had a few playtest games where we are trying to get used to the system again, and get the balance to the sweet spot of taxing but not impossible. The first game I initiated an all versus all game, with players attacking each other and no zombies. One of the major things we learned was that falling damage is incredibly harsh and we have tweaked it around since then to a level that we are happy with.

The second game we pitted the players against a large horde of zombies. Initially, the players were mildly complacent, think they could hold up in one location and simply blow the zombies away as they shambled slowly towards them. Bad luck for the survivors then, as the undead horde kept marching forward, absorbing fair amounts of gunfire. I could see the panic in the players eyes as all hell broke loose and the players scattered. From this game we learned that zombies total hitpoints could probably do with dropping a tad, but otherwise they worked exactly as they should. I decided that zombies in the same area would move and work as a group. This wouldn’t make them anymore intelligent, but it speeds up how long it takes to control them. Another thing that came from this would be whenever our zombies began climbing as a group they would have to pass a collective initiative test of a percentage of that group would fall to the bottom of whatever they are climbing.

The last test session we had, I introduced Left 4 Dead-esque Spitters and Hunters. Hunters turned out to be ultrafast maniacs that get in the survivors face quick and harass them while the regular zombie hordes close in. I am very happy with this, and the player panic levels rise. The spitters are a bit more subtle, using their spit attacks more for area denial, especially if a survivor is in a precarious position already. All player tactics flew out of the window in this game and they purely moved to stay alive. There were a couple of close calls, like one player jumping his character out of a window to escape a group of zombies, only to land awkwardly and fall unconscious anyway.

I shall end today’s post there, but I have plenty more to write about in the future concerning this subject. I amy even get some photos of the characters and write up their backgrounds when they are done.

Thanks for reading!

A catch up with The Power Armoured Beard

Posted in Prittle Prattle on July 12, 2011 by xbevisx

Hello folks.

The old posts have dropped off a lot lately. Here comes the tidal wave of excuses. Work, painting, gigs, movies, bowling and various other activities have distracted me as of late. But I do have a few things to talk about now in no particular.

Foo Fighters at Milton Keynes Bowl. Flipping heck! The only way to describe this show was SPECTACULAR!!! Yes in CAPS and triple exclamations.  Hot Rats, Jimmy Eat World and Biffy Clyro all rocked their support slots hard but the Foos ripped the lid off of it (if the bowl had a lid that is). Seasick Steve, John Paul Jones and a few others join them on stage, and they finish their 3 hour set with Everlong as fireworks explode over head.  I would’ve happily paid double for my ticket and still considered it value for money.

I’ve discovered a new game called Thunderstone from AEG. It is possibly one of my favourite new games (its been out for a while, but its new to me). I’ll review this in more detail another time.

Ross Noble at the West End Centre, Aldershot. Well, I never thought I’d get to see Mr Noble in my humble (read vile) hometown. We snapped up tickets as soon as I saw it posted on the Facebook group, and we got in early enough to get front row seats. In typical Ross fashion his introduction of the first act which was supposed to be 10 minutes long, drew out to 40 minutes. But the whole night was fantastic and I was even lucky enough to get a photo with him! Nice.

I am in the process of trying something interesting at my games club. I’ve dug out my Inquisitor rulebook with the intentions of running a story driven campaign. The Inquisitor rule set is actually a really nicely done book, even though it does require a few tweaks to make sense in places.

I won’t be running in its normal setting, I plan on using some of the character templates for players to make their own heroes. Instead of a couple of players using a few models, each player will have one character to control, with their own goals. Again, I’ll elaborate on this a lot more in future posts.

My band, Victorian Whore Dogs, finally got into the studio and we’ve got some recording done! This was quite a task, and excruciatingly hot weather did not help. Hopefully the fruits of our labour will be available for your delectation soon!

Enough prittling and prattling for now.

Hugs and Kisses

Pondering Achievements

Posted in Prittle Prattle on March 9, 2011 by xbevisx

This next post is something I been thinking about for a while now. I’ll admit that I don’t read a lot of blogs so it very well may have been discussed before.

Are Achievements enhancing my gaming or simply distracting me too much to enjoy the games I buy?

Way back when in the early days of the Xbox 360 I was very intrigued in the concept of achievements. I foolishly thought that you could use your gamer points to purchase items on XBL which although it would be a very cool idea I don’t think Microsoft would go for that.

Wishful thinking aside, I’ll be honest and say that I have had great fun tracking and earning these strange little badges of honour over the years. I’ve only got 100% in two games to date, Deathspank (which really wasn’t too hard actually) and Vanilla Borderlands (but they had to release loads of expansions, snatching my smug victory back away from me, curse their bones). There’s a couple more that I’m not that far from completing. Too Human will require me to do a MMO-esque loot grind with the treasured item not even at a reasonable drop% and Assassin’s Creed, but this requires sitting with a guide, collecting all the flags and finding all the Templars.

Speaking of this does remind me of a very silly achievement I went after, the collectible CD’s in Saint’s Row 2. I literally spent hours chasing them, my girlfriend on the PC next to me pointing out the next area to head to. After all this and finally picking up the 16 billionth CD I had collected them all. The familiar display flashed up on the screen with its pleasing sound (that has obvious ingrained itself into my psyche).

10 Gamer Points.

I had spent hours of my life in the pursuit of 10 gamer points!?! The irony was not lost on me. However the upside of this was I was playing a game well after completing the main storyline and enjoying it. That’s the great thing about achievements, they can help you milk every last bit of gameplay from a recent purchase which equals value for money in my head. There are plenty of games in my library that I would tucked away after completing had it not been required for me to say play through the game again as an evil character or bought my lunch in level 2 wearing slightly different coloured trousers this time.

The downside I slowly discovered was that I had started to read the achievement requirements even before my first playthrough of a game. “What if I spend hours on this title then find out that pulling the red lever instead of the yellow lever would’ve earnt my 10gp’s?” I’d think to myself. It would influence how I played the game and in my eyes this is a terrible thing. Playing games are generally a way for freedom of expression. As this character I would make these decisions, actions and use these tactics. But if you are governed by a set of benchmarks from the word go, you won’t be playing the game as you perhaps normally would.

Luckily, with my game of the moment, Call of Duty: Black Ops, I’ve learnt from my mistakes and barely looked at the achievements. I’ve been having so much fun playing it with friends that they’ve not even really crossed my mind. I’ve got back to having fun in the purest sense.

Achievements were a great addition to gaming all those years ago and I really appreciate them helping me derive more pleasure from a game than maybe I would’ve normally got in the long-term, but if you let them infringe upon your gaming freedom that’s when you need to step back and see the bigger picture.

Magic: The Gathering

Posted in Prittle Prattle on March 7, 2011 by xbevisx

Hello folks,

Since I’ve been working at my new job at the Games Shop I’ve been trying to soak up as much information about games I am not so familiar with. It helps me do my job at a more competent level but it’s also rather fun, no real surprise there.

One of the events we regularly host is “Friday Night Magic” and I thought it was about time I actually learn how to play myself so that I could decipher the cryptic language and terminology the players used. I’ve been aware of Magic: The Gathering for many years but dared not step anywhere near it. It is a CCG (collectible card game) and those things are dangerous. Yes, I am fully aware that I spend a lot of money on small plastic figures but I justify that in the facts that A) I know exactly what I’m buying in each box unlike sealed CCG boosters where everything is pot luck and B) I enjoy the gluing/painting/gaming aspects of my models and I get many hours of use from them.

A few years ago I actually dabbled in the World of Warcraft CCG. I will admit that it was very good fun and the system seemed to work excellently. Then I learnt, as I’m sure many others have done before and since, that someone who spends a lot of money on cards usually has the upper hand. I had a couple of games where there was virtually nothing I could do to play competitively and it completely killed the game for me (it didn’t help that said opponent was a complete and utter jerk, but that’s a different story for another time). I decided there and then that CCG’s were dangerous ground and not for me.

A couple of weeks ago Zoso from Killed in a Smiling Accident invited us round for our usual gaming night. I borrowed a friends copy of Descent (which we didn’t end up playing due to my stupidly forgetting the starter quest guide) and some promotional starter decks of Magic, each pack full of 30 various cards and split into the 5 main colours/factions of the game. Luckily Master Tim VanHemlock used to play a bit of Magic in the past and did an excellent job of teaching us the ropes. Within a game or two we had picked up the system which speaks volumes about the essential simplicity of the system and Tim’s superb tutoring skills.

I can see how Magic can be such an addictive game to play as it is very enjoyable. The basic system is so quick to learn and makes sense within minutes, but building a deck that has great power and synergy takes things to a whole new level. I’ve actually recently downloaded the XBL Arcade version and have been having great fun with it, although it can be quite punishing at times for a noob like me.

I am all too aware of how collecting CCG’s can get out of hand and I’ve seen vast amounts of money spent by people whilst working at the Games Shop. I am very glad that my fellows in the gaming group are happy to stick to the promo decks and just play for fun and I think unless you are willing to spend a lot of money, then this is the best way to play these types of games.

I’ll end with a story my boss told me the other day. In the past he and his friends were doing something similar to our gaming group. A bunch of them all bought starter decks and a couple of boosters, swapping around cards to whoever would find them most useful. They’d have a game now and then and enjoyed it. Then one of the friends decided that this was not enough, rushed out and spent over a hundred pounds on boosters etc. He started winning games but then everyone decided to quit:

“But I’ve just spent all this money on boosters!?!”

“Exactly, and it’s not fun playing against you anymore.”

Lesson learnt.

FFS FPS!

For a long time I’ve eschewed playing FPS games online. Many years ago I used to enjoy a bit of Counter Strike now and then. After a while though it would be hard to turn a corner without being headshot into oblivion by some kid with “leet” skills. I don’t care what you say, dying within a fraction of a second from spawn, before you’ve even loosed off one round is not fun.

It didn’t stop me playing FPS games, I just didn’t play online. I did have some really great times playing system link games round one of my friend’s house. 2 TVs back to back on the coffee table, junk food ordered in and much rowdiness and laughter. I played a lot of co-op Gears of War 1&2 and Halo Reach, and they were great times.

Recently though I caved in a finally bought CoD: Black Ops. I tell you what I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Despite getting completely owned from time to time, I can still hold my own, and even peaked at a 2.00 kill/death ratio (doesn’t sound a lot, but it was a rather proud moment). The leveling and equipment system keep things very addictive, but don’t feel like they have too much of an impact on the game. I could be wrong of course.

The killstreak rewards are a very nice feature in the game. Get a set number of kills without dying and you are granted various rewards in the form of spy-planes that reveal the position of enemies on the mini-map, napalm strikes, all the way up to packs of vicious attack dogs that charge all over the map and cause one hit melee kills. These really spice up battles.

Luckily I’ve really not experienced any smack talk so far. Granted I spend a fair amount of time in a private party with a couple of friends also playing the game, but most of the time I’ve had the headset on whilst playing solo I’ve noticed there’s not a lot of talking in general. This is good because the bad attitudes of many XBL members put me off playing similar things online previously.

I’ve never found myself logging off from dying too much at all which is a good sign. In fact once I’ve started a session, I generally find it hard to stop. I’m either trying to beat challenges, level up or just improve my performance. Consider me a convert.

Warriors of Chaos and the new Orcs & Goblins

Posted in Prittle Prattle, Wargaming, Warhammer Fantasy Battle on February 15, 2011 by xbevisx

Hey there, folks.

I have some photos for you today. Just a couple of shots of the Warriors of Chaos I’m working on. I really do love these models, possibly some of my favourite fantasy battle stuff.

As usual I tried to go for a quick but interesting paint scheme. Quick paint schemes are the best because you don’t get bored halfway through painting a huge army! I chose Tin Bitz (Citadel) / Tinny Tin (Game Colour) as the main colour as I just love the way it looks and its really easy to work with. I’ve tried to add a little bit of weathering to areas of the models.

On a separate note, today I finally got to get my hands on the latest Black Box sent out by Games Workshop at work. For those of you that aren’t aware, the Black Box is a selection of preview models sent out to certain game stores a month or so before the models are actually released. This time we received the new Orc and Goblins army book, a unit of Savage Orc Boys and the Arachnarok Spider.

First things first, I glued the spider together. This thing is huge. In fact here’s a slightly blurry photo taken from my mobile phone http://plixi.com/p/77614231 Luckily it’s a really well designed kit. Everything goes together without too much fuss, there are nice square pegs on some of the legs to shop them being a possible nightmare, and even when I was putting it together and thought “oh no, there’s an awful gap here” usually the next piece I glued on completely disguised the gap! My opinion may change when I finally attach the goblin riders to the top, but only time will tell!

Then I moved onto the Savage Orcs. You can get some really cool poses out of these chaps, although I have noticed that their arm joints are more like the Ogre Kingdom fixed joints than the other Orc kits which possess flat joints. This, plus the fact that the torso and legs come in one piece, could make any possible conversions a bit more challenging. The other thing to be aware of when assembling these is if you aren’t careful how you position them on the base they could cause problems with ranking up, with various limbs stuck out at all angles. Other than that the models have nice character and look like they are ready to give enemies a damn good thumping.

I haven’t had a good read of the army book yet but one thing sticks out like a sore thumb. It has 32 less magic items in it than the previous book! That’s right, we are down to 8(!) magic items. This is pretty shocking and may turn some people off, but I had some good discussions with various friends about this and a few opinions popped up.

1. There are many decent magic items in the main rule book. Maybe the designers are hoping players will consider these a bit more.

2. The magic items that are left are pretty kick ass. There’s also the consideration that some of the other army books have too many magic items. Sure, it’s good to have options but if people are always going to plump for the same old choices, and other items get forgotten for not being worth the points etc, then what’s the point even even printing them? Maybe the designers are thinking “all killer and no filler”?

3. Possibly some of the cool effects granted from certain magic items have become racial/unit abilities, making the game more about what units you choose than what tasty item you give a hero?

We shall see in time how the book pans out, but so far I’ve heard 99% positive feedback. The book, now hardback, is rather nice though and I’ve already pre-ordered mine.

I hear the Tomb Kings will be the next army for a refresh. I’m really interested in what the old dusty bones will get. I’ve heard rumours of a large sphinx creature? But more importantly, I’d quite like a new Ogre Kingdoms book after that please!

My Sleeve Tattoo

Posted in Prittle Prattle on February 2, 2011 by xbevisx

Last year I spent a considerable amount of time and money on getting my first sleeve tattoo. I won’t lie, there were days when travelling to Nine in Brighton I wasn’t looking forward to the pain and cursing myself for such a bright idea, but I’m incredibly happy with the final product.

The original inspiration came from a postcard Amy bought me many years ago.

I had a consultation with Ade, the tattooist and we altered the design. I decided that I wanted the warrior character to be Guan Yu, a famous hero from The Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Here’s the end result.
