Warhammer 40000 6th Edition : First Impressions

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on June 30, 2012 by xbevisx

Hello folks,

A really short post adding a few of my initial opinions on a very big subject: the new 40k rules.

I’ve had a very brief skim read, I’ve chatted a lot with friends who have read in more detail than I have, and I have watched a couple of small games get played. Overall I am impressed and happy with the changes.

  • I like the idea of glancing hits now stripping off “hull points” rather than rolling, albeit modified, on the same table as penetrating hits.
  • I like flyers and how their “zooming” rules work.
  • The random charge range is an interesting new addition to 40k which mixes things up a bit, and snap fire/overwatch makes you feel a little bit less useless when you get charged.

It might just be a “honeymoon” period where everything seems all sparkly and excellent (despite it being a Grimdark future), and in time we might find contradictions and mistakes, but so far all the rules changes or amendments seem to make sense, in a game-play sense but also from a dramatic point of view. If you, like me, tend to envision epic stories unfurling as you play rather than maths, dice rolls and plastic figure moving then the zooming rule helps conjure up images of devastating strafing runs, and the glancing/hull point thing is enemy gunfire slowly taking chucks out of armour, rather than precise critical shots that penetrating hits represent.

I am going to start gaming more soon, and 40k will be one of the main focuses so I will keep updating you with what my experiences reveal!

Power Armoured Beard’s painting table: Season 2 preview

Hello folks,

Here’s some photo’s I’ve just taken of some of the projects I’m either currently working on, planning to work on soon or simply forgot to upload last time I was blogging.

Vladimir Tzepesci, Dark Prince of Umbrey - Khador Warcaster   Vladimir Tzepesci, Dark Prince of Umbrey - Khador Warcaster (rear)

Vladmir of the Khador faction from Warmachine. For more details on Vlad head over to Battle College. I’m pretty happy with the freehand design on the cloak/cape.

Cobra from Hasslefree Miniatures   Cobra from Hasslefree Miniatures 2   Cobra from Hasslefree Miniatures 3

Cobra from Hasslefree Miniatures. I think we all know who this is really. I don’t usually do camo, but I wanted to get this model as close to the real Snake Plissken as possible.

New paint scheme Ogre Bull

I like this new Ogre scheme, and it’s really quick to get a model done. I’m happy with the tin bitz/chainmail on the metal parts of the character, as I was going for a bashed up/scraped metal effect.

New scheme for my personal Space Marine Chapter

Again, a really quick scheme to pull off, which is good because I have hundreds of marine models to paint. Charadon granite and Chainmail (possibly Mithril).

Oh, these paints don’t exist anymore. Yaaaaaay, thanks GW! (/sarcasm). The silver won’t be too hard to replace, but Charadon Granite is such an odd colour. Sometimes it looks grey, sometimes green, sometimes brown!?! I did squirrel away 15 pots before it utterly vanished. I hope it lasts!

New scheme Ork Boy  New scheme Ork Boy 2  New scheme Ork Boy 3

New Ork scheme. Featuring a very similar palette to the new ogre scheme.

You should be seeing more of all of these in upcoming posts.

Looking forward…

Hello folks,

Just a shortish post (it started out shortish, but I wrote more than I had expected – Ed.) today which is probably just as much for my benefit as yours! I’m going to be writing about some projects that I have planned for the near future, which I can hopefully keep on top of. My refueled enthusiasm should help, but only time will tell.

Blood Bowl League

Currently, a few of my gaming friends are running a Warhammer Blood in the Badlands campaign. Once this is finished, I hope to start a small Blood Bowl league. At the moment it looks like their should be 8 teams taking part, which is a pretty decent number. I’m determined to see this league through to completion because the last one I ran fizzled out right at the end due to a couple of players never getting round to playing their games. This time, if you miss the match it will be a forfeit and we won’t stall on unplayed games.

From this league I will have numerous other things to take care of. First and foremost, getting my team built and painted. I’ve gone for a Chaos team this time, instead of my usual Orcs. I played a chaos team on my PC version of Blood Bowl, and with the ability to gain mutations I think it could be a fun team to play and convert model-wise. I have made alteration to the normal way you set up a chaos team however. Usually, you can choose from a Minotaur, Chaos Warriors and Beastmen, but I’ve chosen to use the Marauder models instead (keeping the Beastman stat-line) and I’ve converted a Chaos Spawn to count as my Minotaur. This does not give me an in-game advantage in any way, it was purely an aesthetic choice as I’m not a massive fan of the actual Chaos Blood Bowl team. I have made considerations whilst doing this as well. For example, I made sure all the marauders I have assembled have horned helmets to make sure the “Horns” special rule the Beastmen get still makes sense.

Secondly, I’m looking to get a custom pitch for Magnusson’s Marauders, as I’ve chosen to call them. I’ve been looking on FF Fields for quite a while now and really like their stuff. I’m hoping to get a custom logo made for my team as well. I have contacted them and I’m currently awaiting a reply and price quote. As well as this I shall also attempt to make my own dugout, something avid Blood Bowl players tend to do. The best one I have seen to date however can be viewed here.

Finally, some of you may already know, I’d like to run a fantasy football style league using the stats that are generated from my Blood Bowl league. This way people I know on interwebz that can’t take part in the actual league will instead be able to monitor the leagues progress and also have a bit of fun themselves.

Attempting to get up to speed with my painting

I think it is safe to say I probably won’t need to buy many models for a very long time. Luckily, with the discovery that Fairy Power Spray can strip the paint off of plastic models without melting the plastic itself, I will be able to salvage a lot of old models that I’m not happy with. This includes:

  • Space Marines (WH40k): I think I might be on my 3rd or 4th paint scheme for my marines at the moment. The amount of paint stripping I need to do is scary, but I’m very happy with my current scheme and it is pretty quick and easy to make each marine look pretty good which is the main thing.
  • Ogre Kingdoms (WHFB): 3rd paint scheme for these guys.
  • Imperial Guard (WH40k): Only the 2nd paint scheme I’ve done for these particular chaps. Not that many are actually built so far, and won’t be until the new edition of WH40k comes out, because knowing my luck I’ll build them with options that work nicely in the current edition, only to be rubbish in the new one.
  • Orks (WH40k): Again, not that many actually painted, even though I’m on my 2nd or 3rd paint scheme. Lately, I have had a real urge to build loads of crazy Ork vehicle conversions, although hopefully one of my up-coming projects might help me with this desire.
  • Chaos Warriors (WHFB): Not particularly high on my list of priorities at the moment, but will crack on with them at some point.

Necromunda/Mad Max Campaign

Chatting with a few friends the other night about what other things we’d like to try out and play, and what we decided on was a Necromunda campaign, but one with a difference.

A while ago, GW released rules for playing Necromunda outside of the usual Hive City setting. There are even rules for vehicle creation/combat as well. So why don’t we take the core rules of Necromunda, these additional expanded rules, and build a game that we truly want to play. Where gang fights gang in a desolate, harsh environment simply to survive?

The possibilities for rule tweaking and model conversions is quite exciting. The next few weeks/months will consist of formulating ideas, play-testing and preparation.

This project has also given me the urge to make looks of Post-Apocalyptic style terrain to play around/on. I think a trip to Hobbycraft is on the books soon.

Well that all I can think to write currently. Within the next week I hope to get a few photos up of projects I’m currently working on, until then, take care everyone!

Slaughter Tournament at The Games Shop, Aldershot May 2011

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on June 3, 2011 by xbevisx

Hello everyone!

Today I have a few photos taken at the tournament we ran at the shop I work in. It was a fantastic day and I had great fun organising it. We had 22 players in total, and armies weren’t required to have been painted to take part, but many were to a high standard.

Please enjoy the images.

ORKPOCALYPSE!

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on February 7, 2011 by xbevisx

Well hello there everyone!

Today I have some photos from the event we had yesterday at the shop. For a while now my gaming club have been planning a Warhammer 40k Apocalypse game using just Orks and my boss, the store owner thought that we could do it on Feb 6th which is also his birthday.

So we gathered and glued as many Orks as possible for this event. It was an impressive sight to behold.Just to add a sense of scale the first two pictures in the gallery of the Orks set out on some tables was just one side of the battle. Two units in the game were “Green Tides” which consists of 100 Orks in one single unit!

Please enjoy!

A Happy New Year to you all!

Posted in Blood Bowl, Prittle Prattle, Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on January 2, 2011 by xbevisx

Well the holidays are over now so no excuse to let the old blog slip! I hope you all had a fantastic time. I had a pretty quiet and lazy Christmas, but in no way was that a bad thing. I enjoyed it muchly.

With the new year came new opportunities for me starting with the chance of a new job. It not finalised just yet but when it’s set in stone I’ll let you folks know what it is. I will say however that it could be pretty cool.

I’m a few models away from completing my Raptors army, I shall be posting more photos of them very soon.

After these I need to paint some Ork models up for a huge Apocalypse game we have planned at the Game Shop that will be just Ork-on-Ork violence, funnily enough called Orkpocalypse. If we can make it work its going to be one hell of an event. Expect some fantastic photos from that.

Also in February I’ll be starting my Blood Bowl league which will hopefully last throughout the year as well as the odd one-off weekend tournament. I’ve actually just got back from the Game Shop where I had my first game in quite a while (table top wise). I used an Ogre team which was great fun and was so close to losing the game to an Undead team until I managed to get one of the Ogres to throw his Snotling team-mate, who was holding the ball, down the pitch who then went on to score a touchdown! It reminded me why I love the game so much.

I will now leave you with a few photos to round off this post.

A while ago Forge World released the TAUROS which is a lovely model and a really cool idea/addition for the Imperial Guard army. The only problems are I don’t really like using FW resin and its £30, not a price I can really justify. About a month ago on our gaming clubs Facebook page my friend bought these to my attention. Now, £6 I really can justify and with a little conversion work I think I’ve achieved a decent alternative. I have to admit however that working out which parts were best used to make the Heavy Flamer turret took quite a while. I may get some more of these in the future.

My first Ork Biker for Orkpocalypse. I really love these models, they were design to look cooler than the Fonz jumping 2 sharks and an iceberg.

That’s all for now, friends. Check back in a couple of days for some more pics and waffling.

Converted Demon paintjob.

Posted in Prittle Prattle, Wargaming, Warhammer 40k, Warhammer Fantasy Battle on November 29, 2010 by xbevisx

Hello folks.

Quick update here. My friend, Paul, from the Game Shop is an absolute whizz the Green Stuff (modeling putty). His conversions are beautiful things to behold, and its all come to him so quickly. Recently he bought a Demon Prince kit and after assembling the model he realised he had a spare torso, head and set of arms, so he knocked this out:

The snake-like part of the model is all sculpted by him, including each individual scale. Through the body runs a connection to a small red LED in the chest that when hooked up to a battery, shine through the arrows in the chest that Paul carved out with a knife! So cool!

He is quite new to painting however and didn’t want to paint this model for fear of ruining such a great job, so I offered to paint it for him (although I also became nervous that I would ruin it!). Here’s the result:

One thing I did realise is that I will need a daylight bulb for painting from now on. The skin needs a bit of tidying up as in my painting room under a regular light-bulb and my desk lamp it looked fine, but when I took another look in the kitchen under the strip lighting I realised that the washes I had used were quite blotchy. Other than that I’m happy with how its turned out.

Hopefully in the next couple of days I can bring you and update on the progress I’ve made with my Raptor army.

The Raptor Project. Part 2

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on October 15, 2010 by xbevisx

Pip pip and Tally Ho!

Welcome to the second part of my Raptor project. We’ll be taking a look at the army lists I’ve planned for the campaign so far. It’s useful for me to write these lists up now as this way I’ll be able to build and paint to a set goal. I won’t be buying stuff I’m not likely to use that way.

Okay, so the first list I have is a 1000pt “Boarding Action” list. The first few games of the campaign will be rather specialist and unique. They will represent the various marine chapters fighting each other on spaceships, sometimes within large dock areas, other times on the outside of the ships themselves! The special rules don’t allow most vehicles at all and any walkers (i.e. Dreadnoughts) or jump infantry are at a severe disadvantage. 1000pts on just foot sloggers will be an interesting build indeed and not something I’m used to. Here’s what I went for:

Lias Issodon The Grim, Raptors Chapter Master.
7 Assault Terminators. 3 with thunder hammers and storm shields for the invulnerable saves.
7 Sternguard. Sgt with Lightning Claw.
2 units of 10 Tactical Marines. Each unit has a Plasma Gun and Sgt with Power Weapon.

Think this list should deal with pesky power armoured enemies fairly well with all the plasma and power weapons kicking around.

Lias seems like a really cool character. Really cheap points wise, he has a high ballistic skill and a funky boltgun that has multiple firing options and the ability to use the specialist ammo that Sternguard are issued with. He confers the stealth special rule to the whole army and has a special attack that targets one enemy unit of choice at the start of the game, possibly killing them before they even get their first turn! As Forge World have gone to the trouble of producing rules for a special character for the Raptors and this is a story driven campaign, why wouldn’t I take him? I have my friend who is a wizard at doing cool conversions (he green stuffed the “fat neck” onto my Ogre Kingdoms Butcher) building me a version of Lias as no model exists so far.

The second list is more an all purpose build for typical 40k scenarios.

Lias Issodon The Grim, Raptors Chapter Master.
Chaplain.
8 Assault Marines in a Rhino (if you remove their jump packs you get their Rhino for free). 1 Flamer and Sgt with Power Fist and Storm Shield.
2 x 10 Tactical Marines. Armed with 1 Plasma Cannon, Meltagun and Sgt with Power Weapon and Teleport Homer. Both squads riding in Razorbacks fitted with Twin-linked Lascannons.
6 Assault Terminators. 2 armed with Thunder Hammers and Storm Shields (Possibly 3. Still undecided about this).
2 Dreadnoughts fitted with Assault Cannons and Heavy Flamers.

Couple of notes about this build. I’ve shoved both Lias and the Chaplain with the assault squad in the rhino. Now this could possibly make this a rather tempting target for enemy fire, but the benefits are just too cool in my mind to pass up. The Chaplain allows the unit to reroll misses in the first round of combat and both he and Lias have power weapons. In total this unit will have 10 power weapon, 20 normal and 3 power fist attacks with rerolled misses on the charge. The storm shield should hopefully give the unit a bit more survivability as well.
The Teleport Homers on the Tactical Sgts means the Terminators can deep strike pretty much exactly where I want them.

Don’t know what else to say about these builds right now. I’ll probably have a few tester games with them soon and I’ll keep you updated with any changes I might make.

Until next time, take care, folks!

The Raptor Project. Part 1

Posted in Wargaming, Warhammer 40k on October 14, 2010 by xbevisx

Bear with me on this post. I can’t recall if I’ve told you about any of this in previous posts, so apologies if I have.

My friends Rhys (owner of the local game shop where I spend a lot of my gaming time) and Tom are planning a big two weekend event in January based on the latest Imperial Armour book from Forge World. The book follows the Badab War which saw certain Space Marine chapters revolt against the Imperium. It seems I have also been roped into help organising the event, and the next few months with be very busy with building custom terrain for some hopefully cool looking boards, as well as a new army (or two!).

The campaign will be highly story driven using elements from the Imperial Armour book and we will even be recreating iconic battles. It won’t be as competitive as a tournament probably would be, but that’s not to say that people won’t be playing to win. We are hoping to attract a decent amount of players for either side and every battle will go towards influencing the campaign. For example, if the traitors win more games in a certain phase, they’ll have bonuses for the next phase Of course in the lore the winners have already been decided but this great setting offers us a lot of opportunity to stage exciting battles and re-imagine the Badab War. I’m hoping if we can pull it off, this could be a great event.

In the book we have a list of the Marine chapters involved and we are encouraging people that if they want to play in the campaign they choose to bring one of these named chapters. I will be building and painting a Raptor Marine Chapter which are on the loyalist side. I chose them for a couple of reasons.

Firstly their paint scheme is REALLY easy to make look good, and gives me the opportunity to do some weathering and battle damage because these guys have been through some real tough times in their history. If I am to build another marine army (on top of the huge one I already own, that sits mostly unpainted) I would like one that I can whack together quickly and with minimum fuss.

Secondly Games Workshop and Forge World both make chapter specific items for the Raptors. GW makes shoulder pads for the regular marines with the chapters emblem modelled on them (the Eagle head design is actually shared between the Raptor and Mentor Legion chapters). FW also makes Terminator shoulders and tank doors with the Raptor emblem. This will make the models look even better and recognisable with the minimal amount of effort from me!

Ok, enough babbling from me for now. I don’t have the best levels of concentration right now and I fear I may be very on incoherent soon. I’ll just show you some pictures.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

1. The Space Marine Battleforce. Now a lot of these battleforces work out to be quite good value. They’ll lump a bunch of various models from a particular force into one handy box and it’s generally a good starting block for an army. The marine box contains a 10 man tactical squad, 5 man combat squad, 5 assault marines, 5 scouts and Rhino transport vehicle. Out of interest I went to the GW website to work how much this £50 box would cost if you bought everything separately. Over £90!! I’ll have one of those then, ta very much!

2. I like to snip everything off the sprue straight away into a segmented bits box. It saves space and everything is easy to find.

3. Here are the shoulder pads I told you about. Don’t cost too much to make the army look that much better.

4. A closer detail shot though doesn’t show too well in this photo.

5-7 The first finished Tactical Marine with damaged armour and weathing. Can’t see the finished shoulder too clearly in the last picture but I’ll get some better shots when the whole unit is finished.

Hope you all enjoyed the first step in my Raptor Project. Take care, folks!
